WAPDA Workers Protest in Tando Adam Against Privatization Plan
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) The WAPDA Hydro Electric Central Labour Union staged a strong protest in Tando Adam against the proposed privatization of WAPDA and other unresolved employee issues. As part of the protest, workers locked the offices of six sub-divisions under the HESCO Division Tando Adam including Tando Adam I, Tando Adam II, Odero Lal, and Bhit Shah and observed a complete strike.
Led by Divisional Chairman Noor Hassan Bhughio and other union leaders, a large number of workers marched in a rally that culminated in a sit-in outside the Tando Adam Press Club, where protestors raised slogans against the government.
Union leaders including Noor Hassan Bhughio, Manzoor Khaskheli, Faheem Commando, Rajab Bhughio, Malik Irfan, Abdul Ghaffor Brohi, and Om Parkash addressed the gathering. They accused the federal government of pushing for WAPDA's privatization under pressure from the IMF and World Bank, calling it a grave injustice to thousands of workers and the public.
They said the protest was being held on the instructions of Central President Abdul Latif Nizamani and would continue until further directives are issued.
The leaders also highlighted the issue of vacant posts in WAPDA not being filled, causing severe staff shortages and operational difficulties. They criticized the government for increasing salaries and perks for ministers even on holidays, while ignoring the demands of WAPDA workers.
The protestors demanded an immediate halt to the proposed privatization of WAPDA, warning that demonstrations would persist until their demands are met.
