UN Security Council Also Voices Concerns Over Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty

Islamabad (Web Desk) – The spokesperson for the Foreign Office has stated that the United Nations Security Council has expressed concern over the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and urged both Pakistan and India to avoid military conflict and resolve their issues through diplomatic channels.

According to the spokesperson, a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council was held at Pakistan’s request, during which the deteriorating regional security situation and escalating tensions caused by India were discussed.

During the meeting, member states of the Security Council expressed concern over rising tensions in the region and emphasized that both countries should opt for diplomacy instead of military intervention.

The spokesperson said that several member countries identified the Kashmir issue as a fundamental cause of regional instability and stressed that it should be resolved in accordance with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

During the meeting, the Pakistani representative briefed the council on India’s unilateral actions on April 23 and warned of potentially serious consequences of Indian aggression.

Intelligence reports shared by the representative indicated the possibility of an impending Indian military operation, and references were made to Indian state-sponsored terrorism and targeted killings.

The spokesperson stated that Pakistan is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and reserves the right to self-defense under the UN Charter in case of any aggression.

He further added that Pakistan strongly rejects India’s allegations regarding the Pahalgam attack, calling the baseless and unverified accusations both regrettable and condemnable. He said India uses such incidents to undermine the Kashmiri struggle.

The spokesperson also stated that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is a dangerous move by India. Blocking or diverting the flow of rivers is tantamount to an act of war, and Security Council members have also expressed concern over this matter.

He concluded by saying that Pakistan supports the mediation efforts of the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council, and urged the international community to act responsibly and without delay.
