Tando Adam Union of Journalists (Worker) Protest Against PECA Act
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) A large number of journalists, political activists, social workers, traders, and civil society members staged a protest rally against the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act 2025 (PECA Act) in Tando Adam. The protest was organized by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Workers' Unit Tando Adam, led by senior journalist and union president Mumtaz Tamimi, along with Khalid Khaskheli, Riaz Sanjrani, Razzaq Solangi, Ramzan Sheikh, Haji Soomro, and Nanak Ram Sejwani.
The rally started from the Union Office and culminated at Mohammadi Chowk, where protestors raised slogans against the government’s move to control digital media and curb freedom of expression. The demonstration was also attended by PFUJ Hyderabad General Secretary Ashiq Hussain Saand, Comrade Muhammad Khan Panhwar, Abdul Ghafoor Ansari, Baghi Mujahid Thaheem, Sarwar Abro, Sajid Chakrani, Gul Hassan Lakho, Iqbal Bhatti, Habib Behlum and representatives from various political, social, and trade organizations.
The protestors strongly condemned the PECA Act, calling it a direct attack on press freedom and democratic values. They stated that the law was designed to suppress independent journalism and restrict free speech under the guise of cyber laws. "This act is a serious threat to journalistic freedom and fundamental rights. It will push free media into a dead end," the protest leaders said.
They demanded an immediate withdrawal of the PECA Act, warning that if the government failed to repeal it, protests and sit-ins would be held across Sindh and the entire country. The protestors also called on human rights organizations and international bodies to take notice of the government's attempt to control digital media and restrict freedom of expression.
