Sea Swallows Millions of Acres of Land Due to Lack of Water Reaching Kotri Downstream!
Karachi (Web Desk): Due to the lack of water reaching Kotri downstream, the Indus Delta is on the brink of destruction. The sea has already swallowed millions of acres of land, forcing local communities and fishermen to migrate.
The shortage of water in Kotri downstream has led to the encroachment of seawater into millions of acres of agricultural land in the Indus Delta.
Due to the lack of freshwater from the river, populations near the delta have been forced to relocate. Meanwhile, fishermen have docked their boats and are struggling to make a living.
The Indus Delta, once a confluence of the Indus River and the Arabian Sea where river water used to hold back the sea, is now completely deprived of freshwater. As a result, the sea is advancing and engulfing fertile lands.
The Indus River, which used to carry millions of tons of silt in its flow, provided crucial support to aquatic life and contributed significantly to the growth of mangrove forests.
As the sea continues to swallow land, residents of coastal towns such as Keti Bunder, Kharo Chan, Bagan, Thari Shah, and others are suffering from a severe shortage of freshwater, and many have been forced to migrate. This situation has also made the livelihood of fishermen extremely difficult.
The water shortage in Kotri downstream has dealt a severe blow to both fishing and agriculture in the coastal belt.
Additionally, several fish species have become extinct, including the famous “Pallo” fish, which is now rare. Crops such as rice, betel leaf, cotton, bananas, spinach, vegetables, and others have also suffered great damage.
Experts and local residents warn that if urgent measures are not taken or if freshwater is not released toward the delta, the Indus Delta could completely vanish. Millions of acres of coastal land could be lost to the sea, and the region’s natural ecosystem may be destroyed.
