JSM announces ‘Save Sindh March’ in Nawabshah on Sept20

Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) Chairman of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) Riaz Chandio has announced a “Save Sindh March” in Nawabshah on Sept 20 to campaign for the protection of the Indus River and Sindh’s natural resources, and urged people to participate in the march.

Speaking at a press conference at the Tando Adam Press Club, Mr Chandio said the Sindh Assembly had passed a resolution against any possible division of Sindh, while five unanimous resolutions on the province’s indivisibility had already been adopted.

He said passing resolutions alone was not enough and called for practical measures to protect the Indus River and Sindh’s resources.

Criticising the Pakistan Peoples Party, Mr Chandio alleged that strong statements about Sindh’s unity were being made to divert public attention from issues of governance and alleged corruption. He said the debate over “administrative units” could create concerns about the integrity of Sindh and fuel hatred in the province.

He said the Indus River, oil, gas and coal were natural resources of Sindh and called for serious efforts for their protection. He demanded that Sindh be provided its due share of water under the 1991 Water Accord, saying water shortages were severely affecting agriculture in the province.

Referring to Sanghar district, he said that despite a bumper cotton crop, several areas lacked drinking water, while the agricultural economy was facing a serious crisis. He also called upon the Sindh Assembly to pass a clear resolution for the protection of the Indus River.

Mr Chandio said Sindh’s Urdu-speaking permanent residents were also equal stakeholders in the province and urged all communities to unite for the protection of Sindh’s resources and territorial integrity.

He appealed to the people of Sindh to attend the Sept 20 march in Nawabshah and play their role in protecting the Indus River and the province’s natural resources.

Elahi Bakhsh Chachar, Ayaz Solangi, Pervez Chandio, Ahmed Khan Khoso, Manthar Choolyani and others were also present.
