Installation of the Cardiac CT scan machine at Dow Ojha Campus, and echocardiogram facilities for both children & adults now available under one roof.

Karachi : Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy Vice-Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, stated that a Cardiac CT scan machine, aiding in the diagnosis of heart diseases, has been installed at Dow Hospital. The facility will soon be operational for patients. Previously, echocardiograms for children and adults were conducted at separate locations, but now, for the convenience of patients, the machines for both have been centralized in the OPD and inaugurated. The prevalence of heart diseases is rapidly increasing nationwide, necessitating measures to reduce this rate.

He expressed these views while addressing the seminar as the chief guest after an awareness walk and unveiling the plaque for the echocardiogram facility, held in connection with World Heart Day, at Dow University’s Dow Institute of Cardiology at the OPD block of Ojha Campus. Director of Dow Institute of Cardiology, Dr. Tariq Farman, and Principal of Dow International Medical College, Professor Iftikhar Ahmed, were also present. Prior to this, an awareness walk led by Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Jahan Ara Hasan was held from the OT Complex to the OPD Block.

In his seminar address, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy highlighted that Pakistan faces the challenge of a dangerous rise in the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Heart disease has become the leading cause of death worldwide, claiming 18 million lives annually. In our country alone, around 250,000 people die from heart diseases each year, and the number is continuously rising.

The theme for World Heart Day 2024 is to encourage people worldwide to take care of their heart health. It is essential to motivate people and instill the responsibility of heart health in them. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Jahan Ara Hasan emphasized that without reducing risk factors, the increasing rate of heart diseases cannot be controlled. Dr. Tariq Farman in his speech stated that by adopting a natural lifestyle—exercising, eating mindfully, going to bed early, and getting enough sleep to wake up early—we can prevent heart diseases. Dr. Muhammad Hashim said that high blood pressure is a serious issue that can result in strokes and other complications, and steps need to be taken to maintain normal blood pressure.

Dr. Masood Sharafi clarified the misconception that children do not have cholesterol, which is a significant cause of blocked heart vessels. This is incorrect, as cholesterol levels can rise in children as well, and heart disease rates are increasing among children and youth today. Dr. Asad Ali Mangi, Dr. Naveed, and other speakers also addressed the seminar. At the end of the event, “Yoga mats” and healthy food like fruits and juice were distributed to the participants. Subsequently, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy unveiled the plaque for the echocardiogram facility for children and adults.
