Defence Day event in Karachi honours fallen soldiers and military heroes

Karachi: A Defence Day event at Iqra University has paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces and national heroes, while urging young people to contribute to the country’s development.

The event, organised by the Sindh government’s Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, marked 6 September, commemorating the 1965 war between Pakistan and India. Speakers recalled the events of the 1965 war; the role of the armed forces and the sacrifices made in the defence of the country.

A panel discussion featured retired military officers including Vice Admiral Shah Sohail Masood, Air Vice Marshal Usaid-ur-Rehman Usmani, Brigadier Syed Karrar Hussain Shah, Colonel Mukhtar Butt, Squadron Leader Nafees Ahmed Rabbani and Commander Dr Muhammad Tahir.

The panellists discussed the historical context of the 1965 war and the contribution of the armed forces, while encouraging students to play a constructive role in Pakistan’s future.

Director General of the Press Information Department Mrs. Iram Tanveer, attended as guest of honour and paid tribute to those who had lost their lives in the defence of the country.

Munawar Ali Mahesar, Sindh secretary for sports and youth affairs, said Defence Day represented more than the commemoration of a historical event, describing it as a reminder of national unity, sacrifice, determination and patriotism. He urged young people to contribute to national development through education, skills and responsible conduct.

Additional Secretary Dr Asad Ishaq also addressed the gathering, while Syed Habibullah, deputy director of the Directorate of Youth Affairs Sindh, said the department sought to use national commemorations to familiarise younger generations with Pakistan’s history and the sacrifices associated with its creation and defence.

Certificates were presented to students at the conclusion of the event, while commemorative shields were given to speakers and other participants. The organizers said the event was intended to strengthen young people’s understanding of national history and encourage them to contribute to the country as responsible and active citizens.
