Hydro Electric Workers Union stages protest in Tando Adam over WAPDA privatisation plan
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) The Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union staged a pen-down strike, protest rally and sit-in in Tando Adam on Tuesday against the proposed privatisation of WAPDA, non-filling of vacant posts, and other service-related grievances.
A large number of employees participated in the protest, which began from the divisional office and culminated in front of the Press Club, where the participants held a demonstration and staged a sit-in. The protesters raised slogans against government policies and demanded immediate resolution of their issues.
The rally was led by Divisional Chairman Noor Hassan Bhughio and General Secretary Akhtar Ali Kaloi. Other union leaders, including Manzoor Khaskheli, Faheem Qureshi Commando, Lal Kumar, Ayub Kaloi, Shakeel Rajput, Irfan Malik, Rustam Ali Magsi, Akbar Nizamani, Rajab Ali Bhughio, Abdul Ghani Nizamani, Shaukat Ali Khoso and Om Prakash, also addressed the participants.
Speaking on the occasion, the leaders said the proposed privatisation of WAPDA would be “detrimental” to thousands of employees and against public interest. They said that a nationwide protest movement had been launched under the directives of Central Chairman Abdul Latif Nizamani.
They further pointed out that a large number of vacancies in WAPDA had remained unfilled for a long time, resulting in staff shortages and operational difficulties.
The leaders warned that if the government did not withdraw the privatisation proposal and address employees’ demands, the protest drive would be expanded further across the country.
